Liberace was one of the most shining and eccentric stars of the USA. During almost four decades on the stage – the piano virtuoso & entertainer climbed up to one of the highest paid entertainers ever. This reflected just too well in his flamboyant, ‘private’ life: full of kitsch, escapades and relationships ending in disasters, lawsuits, drugs, denials…

The new movie Behind the Candelabra (directed by Steven Soderbergh) shows the shiny but broke world of the egocentric star. Michael Douglas playing Liberace (maybe the role of his life!) portrays perfectly the whole spectrum somewhere in the middle of fame, wealth, despair, love, passion interacting with the fantastic Matt Damon as his much younger Lover Scott Thorson. 

What makes this movie so special, isn’t only the fact about Liberaces (decade long!) denied homosexuality, but the amazingly detailed portrait and the perfect profile of a love affair between two completely different characters. The story circle is also very harmonic as the beginning is the end and vice versa, meaning the entrance of Scott Thorson into Liberaces life is someones end, and the end of the Scott & Liberace relationship is the beginning for another (much younger) guy entering Liberaces sparkly world of excess. What follows is clear: broken hearts, disappointments, drugs and other escapades…

Somewhere in the middle of it all – a very refreshing and hilarious Rob Lowe as an cosmetic surgeon! Fantastic! 

Loved it! Hope Michael Douglas wins the Oscar for his role, despite of his stupid, stupid statements regarding oral sex and cancer.
